SCENE 1:

INTRO OPTION 1A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit, or if you are starting the series at this point.)

(Darren stands holding a Bible, just staring at the book’s cover when Brook walks in and notices.)

BROOK:
Hey Darren... What are you doing?

DARREN:
Trying to read the Bible.

BROOK:
It helps if you open the book.

DARREN:
(signing helplessly)
I’ve tried that. There are so many big words, and funny names, and-

BROOK:
I bet if it was a computer game, you’d be all into it.

DARREN:
Or just IMAGINE – if we could time travel back, and SEE the Bible stories as they happen!

BROOK:
So, why don’t we try that?!

(Darren holds the Bible while Brook opens it up. Both look at the Bible together, eyes wide and exited.)

INTRO OPTION 1B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)

(Darren and Brook enter. Darren carries a Bible.)

BROOK:
Remember? The Israelites have left Egypt and are going home to the Promised Land! I can’t wait for them to get there!

DARREN:
Then, let’s get ready for imagination time travel!

(Darren holds the Bible up, while Brook opens the Bible. They look with excitement, then look around, wondering.)

SCENE 2:

(Moses enters and slowly walks along and stops.)

DARREN:
Here’s Moses, now. Leading the Israelites away from Egypt and their slavery.

BROOK:
He’s moving very slowly.

DARREN:
Well, he does have about two million people and all their animals - following him.

(Man rushes onstage and catches up to Moses.)

MAN:
Moses, why are we going this way? Would there not be a shorter, easier way?

MOSES:
God knows there are wars in those places and does not want us to be afraid. AND He wants to keep us safe.

MAN:
And just how will you KNOW which way to go?

MOSES:
(stopping, motioning to the sky)
God is leading us with the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night.

MAN:
Oh, I just thought the cloud was there to keep us cool, and the fire to keep us warm. But- why are we stopping now?

MOSES:
God has told us to setup camp right here.

MAN:
But why HERE? Why right beside the Red Sea? If the Egyptians come, we will all be trapped – and killed.

DARREN:
(reading)
Actually, God had a plan, because God knew- Pharaoh was going to change his mind and send his armies out to get the Israelites back.

BROOK:
But why? They won’t be killed, will they?

(Darren turns a page. Man points offstage.)

MAN:
Look! See! I told you! Here they come now! The Egyptian army! What will we do? We’re as good as dead! So why did we ever leave Egypt? Did you just bring us out here to die?

MOSES:
Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will do for you today; for those Egyptians over there, will soon be no more. God will fight for you while you just- keep quiet– and- move forward.

MAN:
Into the sea?! We cannot swim.

(Moses lifts up staff and stretches out hand to offstage. Man watches in amazement. Moses motions for all to follow. Woman enters catching up to Man as they exit across the stage.)

BROOK:
Whoa– so cool. The Red Sea parted, and all the Israelites safely walked across. So now what? Will the Egyptians chase the Israelites forever?

DARREN:
While the Egyptian army was crossing over, God let the waters crash down on top of them. The entire army was gone. The Israelites celebrated. And news of this spread to other nations so that they trembled in feared of Israel’s God.

(Darren turns Bible page. Moses enters. Man and Woman follow behind, wearily.)

BROOK:
So now things should be going well.

MAN:
Moses. We have been wandering in the wilderness for three days now.

WOMAN:
The water in this place is bitter, and we are dying of thirst.

BROOK:
Wow. So dramatic. It’s like babysitting the spoiled, whiny kids down the street.

(Moses falls to his knees to pray.)

DARREN:
Moses prayed, and God showed him a tree and told him to throw it into the water. The water then became sweet.

BROOK:
So God not only protected the Israelites, but God also provided for them. They must have been very grateful for that.

(Moses stands up as Man and Woman complain to him.)

MAN:
It’s been over a month now! It would have been better to die in Egypt where we had pots of meat, and lots of bread.

WOMAN:
Did you just bring us out here to die?

BROOK:
(hopefully)
Are we there yet?

(Moses kneels in earnest prayer, then stands up. Man and woman look around over the ground.)

DARREN:
God heard their grumbling, so every evening, God sent the people meat, and every morning, God sent bread from heaven.

WOMAN:
I know what quail is, but - what is THAT?

(Man pretends to pick up something from the ground to taste.)

MAN:
It kind of tastes like wafers and honey. But to have this every day will get very boring.

WOMAN:
Well, let’s call it- manna. And to change it up a bit, I can try a few different things. One day I’ll boil it, next day I’ll bake it-

MOSES:
The afternoon sun will melt it away, so just gather what you need each day. Do not gather extra and leave it for next day.

DARREN:
(turning Bible page)
That was a test of obedience. But did the people obey? No.

WOMAN:
Ew! What has happened!

DARREN:
If anyone disobeyed and kept any manna overnight, it bred worms and it became smelly.

MOSES:
Tomorrow is the Sabbath and a day of rest, so today, gather twice as much as you need so you have something for tomorrow. For on the Sabbath it will not go bad because God will bless your obedience.

BROOK:
Let me guess, some people did NOT trust God or obey.

(Darren turns a page. Man and Woman complain to Moses.)

MAN & WOMAN:
Where’s the manna? There’s nothing to eat? I’m so hungry!

BROOK:
Did they ever learn to obey or trust God or stop complaining?

(Brook curiously turns Bible page.)

WOMAN:
There’s no water here! I’m so thirsty!

MAN:
We are all going to die. We need water!

(Moses pulls his hair, then falls to his knees in prayer.)

DARREN:
Moses prayed, and God told Moses to strike a particular rock with his staff. And there was water.

BROOK:
(turning Bible page)
But now what?

MAN:
Look! We’re being attacked by those people! NOW we are all going to die!

(Moses points. Man exits. Moses kneels in prayer with arms raised. Woman helps hold his arms up when they get tired.)

DARREN:
The tribe of Amalek attacked. While the men of Israel fought, as long as Moses’ arms were raised in prayer the Israelites would win.

MAN:
(enters)
Victory! Yes! We won! We won!

WOMAN:
(speaking to Moses)
Now, what are you going to do about the living conditions?

MAN:
Exactly. Our neighbors are being such a pain.

WOMAN:
I know, right?! All they do is fight and complain!

(Groaning, Moses exits, leaving Man and Woman wondering.)

DARREN:
When Moses’ father-in-law came to visit, he saw that Moses was exhausted and suggested that Moses ask elders to help with the small problems, so Moses would have time and energy for the bigger problems.

(Moses re-enters. Man and Woman approach.)

WOMAN:
Now, what are you going to do about the living conditions?

MAN:
Exactly. Our neighbors are being such a pain.

MOSES:
Those men over there will help you with stuff like that.

(Moses points offstage. Man and Woman rush out, angrily. Moses follows.)

BROOK:
Did that help? Did they every get along? Were they ever going to learn to obey?

DARREN:
Well, we struggle to obey. And we even have the Bible, God’s own words, right here with us to read and study. That just shows us how much we need God in our lives.

SCENE 3:

ENDING OPTION 3A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit.)

(Darren closes the Bible.)

DARREN:
While God has a plan, He is so very patient with us!

BROOK:
(speaking as they exit)
I’m so glad God loves us that much to never give up on us!

ENDING OPTION 3B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)

(Darren closes the Bible.)

DARREN:
While God has a plan, He is so very patient with us!

BROOK:
Hopefully next time the Israelites will learn to obey God and get to their promised land. I’m just so thankful that God loves us that much to never give up on us!

(Brook comments as they exit.)
