TOPIC:
Disobedience.
SCRIPTURE:
Genesis 34:1-38:30.
CHARACTERS (LINE COUNT) DESCRIPTION:
( 8) BROOK – inquisitive girl
( 9) DARREN – adventurous boy
(13) REUBEN –
(14) JUDAH –
PROPS:
Bible (which can have script inside).
SCENE 1:
INTRO OPTION 1A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit, or if you are starting the series at this point.)
(Darren stands holding a Bible, just staring at the book’s cover when Brook walks in and notices.)
BROOK:
Hey Darren... What are you doing?
DARREN:
Trying to read the Bible.
BROOK:
It helps if you open the book.
DARREN:
(signing helplessly)
I’ve tried that. There are so many big words, and funny names, and-
BROOK:
I bet if it was a computer game, you’d be all into it.
DARREN:
Or just IMAGINE – if we could time travel back, and SEE the Bible stories as they happen!
BROOK:
So, why don’t we try that?!
(Darren holds the Bible while Brook opens it up. Both look at the Bible together, eyes wide and exited.)
INTRO OPTION 1B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)
(Darren and Brook enter. Darren carries a Bible.)
BROOK:
Does the Jacob-story still continue, and are things going to go well for the family?
DARREN:
Let’s find out. Get ready for imagination time travel!
(Darren holds the Bible up, while Brook opens the Bible. They look with excitement, then look around, wondering.)
SCENE 2:
(Reuben and Judah enter, annoyed. As Judah tries to talk, Reuben sits with his back towards Judah and ignores him.)
JUDAH:
Reuben!
(Still being ignored, Judah paces angrily.)
DARREN:
(referring to the Bible)
Okay, so these are two of the oldest sons of Jacob– I mean Israel. I know God changed his name changed to Israel, but we can still call him Jacob.
BROOK:
(looking around)
And where’s Joseph? That was Jacob’s favorite son, because his favorite wife gave birth to him. Although we already know all too well that having more than one wife, and having favorite children only leads to trouble.
DARREN:
And - how! So, Joseph is gone. The brothers got so jealous and annoyed, they did something to him.
JUDAH:
Reuben! We need to talk.
REUBEN:
I’m just so tired of Father scolding us. And telling us to put away our foreign idols and “get right with God.”
JUDAH:
It’s all because of that covenant. A covenant - with - God. You do know that when we obey God, we will be blessed.
REUBEN:
Father is already very rich. So, if we want to be rich, all we have to do is stop disappointing Father.
JUDAH:
Which includes not disappointing God. And it’s not just about being rich. There’s also something about having peace. Having said that, I don’t think we are all THAT bad.
REUBEN:
Judah, do you forget what we did in the city of Shechem?
DARREN:
Oh, the prince in that city raped their sister. The brothers were very angry! And even though their father, Jacob, was trying to sort that out peacefully, the brothers, Simeon and Levi went and killed all the men in that city. Then all the brothers looted the place.
BROOK:
Oh, you mean, they took everything valuable for themselves. Did Joseph join in on that? What has happened to Joseph?
DARREN:
No, Joseph was already gone. And we should find out about him soon.
JUDAH:
At least now, no matter where we move, our enemies will fear us. Although, I think that has more to do with Father’s obedience and his prayers to God. But, I do not see Father’s prayers working now. It seems we did a good job of getting rid of Joseph. Father’s favorite son! I hate that Father did not hide his feelings at all. And giving Joseph that expensive coat! Father never gives any of us gifts like that. What is so great about Joseph anyway? He was such an annoying brat. And THEN he had those dreams about how one day we would all bow down to him. Well, we made sure that could never happen! Ha!
REUBEN:
I wonder if Joseph is still alive?
(While Judah and Rueben think, Brook turns to Darren.)
BROOK:
So just how many sons did Jacob have?
DARREN:
(referring to the Bible)
There were twelve sons in total. And two of the sons, Joseph and Benjamin, were sons from Rachel, his favorite wife. But Rachel died in childbirth with Benjamin.
BROOK:
Oh, so Jacob’s favorite wife died. And Joseph, his favorite son, is gone. So, Jacob was probably super sad, and super protective over Benjamin. The plot thickens.
(Judah and Reuben stop wondering and look at each other.)
JUDAH:
Even if Joseph is still alive, I do not think it would be going well for him. So I hope for his sake - he’s dead.
REUBEN:
You mean for our sake. You just don’t want Father to find out what really happened.
JUDAH:
I was the one who suggested that Joseph be sold into slavery, instead of just leaving him down in a deep pit to die.
REUBEN:
I was the one to stop all of you from killing him in the first place. You just wanted to sell him so you could get some money out of the deal.
JUDAH:
Joseph basically spied on us, then reported back to Father everything we did wrong. So when he came looking for us again out in the fields – it was payback time. And as far as Father knows, wild animals killed Joseph.
REUBEN:
Except - we are STILL responsible for crushing Father’s heart.
JUDAH:
There is still our half-brother, Benjamin. We know those two sons are Father’s favorite because their mother was his favorite wife! I really thought things would get better for us after Rachel died.
REUBEN:
Obviously you do not understand true love, or about being responsible.
JUDAH:
I am not responsible? You should talk! You were with one of Father’s concubines!
DARREN:
Oh! That was a very wrong thing to do!
REUBEN:
Father forgave me. But what about the shame that YOU have brought onto the family.
BROOK:
It’s like a competition about who’s not the worst!
JUDAH:
How in the world was I to know that the prostitute was my daughter-in-law!
DARREN:
Also a very wrong thing to do!
REUBEN:
If you had raised your sons better, she would not have had to do that in order to have a son. What else could she do but take matters into her own hands.
JUDAH:
(sighing)
Do you think we’re being punished?
REUBEN:
We’ve done a lot of stupid things in our lives, haven’t we?
JUDAH:
I mean, are we being punished extra for what we did to our half-brother Joseph?
REUBEN:
I don’t know if we’ll ever find out. But - that’s all in the past. And hopefully it stays there.
(Judah and Reuben walk off stge.)
SCENE 3:
ENDING OPTION 3A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit.)
(Darren closes the Bible.)
DARREN:
No sin is really in the past, unless we repent of our sins. While God has a plan, He is so very patient with us!
BROOK:
(speaking as they exit)
I’m so glad God loves us that much to never give up on us!
ENDING OPTION 3B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)
(Darren closes the Bible.)
DARREN:
No sin is really in the past, unless we repent of our sins. But, while God has a plan, He is so very patient with us!
BROOK:
I’m just so thankful that God loves us that much to never give up on us! I can’t wait until next time to see what happened to Joseph, and if he is still alive!
(Brook comments as they exit.)
