(Ideal for a class going through the main Bible stories. For more, see Time Travel Bible Series menu page.)
STYLE:
Drama/fantasy. (7 pages)
PREMISE:
Brook and Darren imagine what it must have been like after the flood, when the Tower of Babel was being built.
TOPIC:
Sin, judgment, God’s care.
SCRIPTURE:
Genesis 9:18-11:26.
CHARACTERS (LINE COUNT) DESCRIPTION:
() BROOK – inquisitive girl
() DARREN – adventurous boy
( ) MAN 1 –
( ) MAN 2 – knows Spanish, or another language
( ) MAN 3 – knows German, or another language
PROPS:
Shovel, 5 bricks (ie. make from shoeboxes), Bible (which can have script inside).
SCENE 1:
INTRO OPTION 1A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit, or if you are starting the series at this point.)
(Darren stands holding a Bible, just staring at the book’s cover when Brook walks in and notices.)
BROOK:
Hey Darren... What are you doing?
DARREN:
Trying to read the Bible.
BROOK:
It helps if you open the book.
(Darren sighs and looks helplessly at Brook.)
DARREN:
I’ve tried that. There are so many big words, and funny names, and-
BROOK:
I bet if it was a computer game, you’d be all into it.
DARREN:
Or just IMAGINE – if we could time travel back, and SEE the Bible stories as they happen!
BROOK:
So, why don’t we try that?!
(Darren holds the Bible while Brook opens it up. Both look at the Bible together, eyes wide and exited.)
INTRO OPTION 1B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)
(Darren and Brook enter. Darren carries a Bible.)
BROOK:
So, the earth had a fresh new start right after the flood. I’m so curious to see if people have learned a lesson about God.
DARREN:
Then, get ready for imagination time travel!
(Darren holds the Bible up, while Brook opens the Bible. They look with excitement, then look around, wondering.)
SCENE 2:
(Brook and Darren quickly step forward as Man 1-2 enter from stage left, each carrying a “heavy” brick across at the same time as Man 3 enters at stage right holding a shovel. Man 3 steps back to get out of Man 1-2’s way.)
MAN 1:
Out of our way!
(While Man 1-2 exit stage right with their bricks, Man 3 just stands there.)
BROOK:
What is going on?
DARREN:
(checking Bible)
Oh, I see. Right after Noah and his family left the ark, his three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, all started raising their families with their wives.
BROOK:
So from these three sons, the whole earth was populated?
DARREN:
Yes. God had told them to “Be fruitful, and multiply, and FILL the earth.” Meaning, they were supposed to spread out.
BROOK:
So they all had a close relationship with God?
DARREN:
Well... no.
(Man 1-2 enter and look at Man 3.)
MAN 1:
Come on! We need you over here again with that shovel!
(Man 3 exits wearily behind Man 1-2 to stage left.)
DARREN:
At that time, everyone spoke the same language. Those who lived in the land of Shinar, those specifically from Ham’s family, decided to build a big city and a tower whose top would reach into heaven.
BROOK:
Because? Well, I mean, is there anything really wrong with that?
(Man 1-2 enter stage left, each carrying a brick. Darren and Brook step back, out of their way, again. Man 1-2 talk while walking across and exit again.)
MAN 1:
I cannot wait until this city is done. Everyone in the whole world will know that WE are the most powerful.
MAN 2:
And that way we can block people from moving out into the rest of the land.
BROOK:
Oh, they were trying to stop people from obeying God. People were SUPPOSED to spread out over the earth.
(Man 1-2 enter again while talking and crossing.)
MAN 2:
Just think, we will have ultimate control. And when they see this high tower, nobody will dare mess with us, that’s for sure.
MAN 1:
And we can show the world that we do not need God. I mean, who does He think He is, anyway? Right? We will take control of everything!
(Man 1-2 exit.)
BROOK:
Oh no. You’d think people would have learned not to disobey or run away from God.
DARREN:
Well, of course, God saw what they were trying to do, and He was going to stop them.
(Man 1 enters stage left carrying a brick. Man 1 stops to yell at the Men behind him. The phrases in parenthesis can be translated into any other languages. For this, I have Man 2 speaking Spanish and Man 3 speaking German. And for this purpose, it doesn’t even have to sound perfect- just different.)
MAN 1:
Come on. Let’s all start carrying bricks to the work site.
(Man 2 enters without a brick.)
MAN 2:
¿Qué estás diciendo? (What are you saying?)
MAN 1:
What? What’s your problem? Where’s your brick? Go get a brick!
MAN 2:
¿Cómo? No entiendo.(What? I don’t understand)
(Man 3 enters with shovel. Man 1 now sees Man 3.)
MAN 1:
You there! I told you to start carrying bricks. Put the shovel away.
MAN 3:
Ich verstehe nicht. (I don’t understand.)
MAN 1:
What is going on here? You’re all speaking jibberish.
MAN 3:
Sie seltsam klingen. Aber haben Sie schon immer seltsam. (You sound strange, but you have always been strange.)
(Man 1 tries to give brick to Man 3 who exits with shovel.)
MAN 3:
Nein! Aus dem Weg. (No. Out of my way.)
MAN 2:
Él tiene que trabajar! (He needs to work!)
(Man 2 points at Man 3 angrily, then follows after. Man 1 stomps after Man 2, still carrying a brick.)
DARREN:
God confused their language, so they could no longer carry out their plans.
BROOK:
Ah, so this is how we got all the different languages.
(Man 1-3 enter while speaking then stand still in a group while glancing at each other suspiciously.)
MAN 2:
¿Cómo? (What?)
MAN 3:
Ich verstehe nicht. (I don’t understand.)
MAN 1:
I don’t know what you are all saying! What is wrong with you all?
DARREN:
And this is when and how God spread people out across the earth.
(Man 1 exits upper stage right.)
DARREN:
Japheth’s big family moved to the general area that is now Europe.
(Man 2 exits stage left.)
DARREN:
Shem’s big family settled in the area that is known as Asia.
(Man 3 exits lower stage left.)
DARREN:
Ham’s big family settled in Africa. And it is interesting to note that because Ham had sinned against his father, Ham’s youngest son, Canaan would be cursed. Canaan’s family would become the Canaanites, the nation who would do many very evil things. But God eventually led people into battles which slowly made that nation completely disappear.
SCENE 3:
ENDING OPTION 3A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit.)
(Darren closes the Bible.)
DARREN:
While God has a plan, He certainly is very patient with us!
BROOK:
I’m so glad God loves us that much to never give up on us! There must be someone left who will want to have a close relationship with God!
(BROOK comments as they exit.)
ENDING OPTION 3B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)
(Darren closes the Bible.)
DARREN:
While God has a plan, He certainly is very patient with us! I wish I were that patient, because I can’t wait to see what happens next time.
BROOK:
I want to know if there was anyone left who wanted to have a close relationship with God? I’m just so glad God loves us that much to never give up on us!
(Brook comments as they exit.)
