TOPIC:
Choice, sin, hope.
SCRIPTURE:
Genesis 3:1-24.
CHARACTERS (LINE COUNT) DESCRIPTION:
(23) BROOK – inquisitive girl
(22) DARREN – adventurous boy
( 1) ADAM –
( 2) EVE –
( 2) SNAKE’S VOICE –
PROPS:
Potted tree with “fruit” to be pulled off, Bible (which can have script inside).
SCENE 1:
INTRO OPTION 1A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit, or if you are starting the series at this point.)
(Darren stands holding a Bible, just staring at the book’s cover when Brook walks in and notices.)
BROOK:
Hey Darren... What are you doing?
DARREN:
Trying to read the Bible.
BROOK:
It helps if you open the book.
(Darren sighs and looks helplessly at Brook.)
DARREN:
I’ve tried that. There are so many big words, and funny names, and-
BROOK:
I bet if it was a computer game, you’d be all into it.
DARREN:
Or just IMAGINE – if we could time travel back, and SEE the Bible stories as they happen!
BROOK:
So, why don’t we try that?!
(Darren holds the Bible while Brook opens it up. Both look at the Bible together, eyes wide and exited.)
INTRO OPTION 1B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)
(Darren and Brook enter. Darren carries a Bible.)
BROOK:
Time to check out what happens to Adam and Eve who were just created.
DARREN:
Ready for imagination time travel?
BROOK:
Let’s go!
(Darren holds the Bible up, while Brook opens the Bible. They look with excitement, then look around, wondering.)
SCENE 2:
(Adam and Eve appear beside them, and tree is pushed out.)
DARREN:
There they are, Adam and Eve, enjoying the Garden of Eden! They had all the food they could possibly eat, right there.
BROOK:
But remember, God told Adam that there was only one thing NOT to eat from – which was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, or there would be death.
DARREN:
I suppose God did that because He created us with a free will. If God had NOT put that tree there, there would be no choice to make. And without a choice, we’d be nothing more than robots. Without any feelings.
BROOK:
God created us with a free will, feelings, a brain to think, as well as with a purpose – which is to have a personal relationship with Him. But we have to want that and choose that for ourselves.
(Adam exits with a wave.)
DARREN:
(checking Bible)
Right. Okay, well- it looks like Eve found herself alone. Maybe Adam and Eve had a fight.
BROOK:
Naw-ah – things were still perfect. Maybe Adam was just stretching his legs- getting a bit of exercise.
(Eve wanders around and circles the tree with curiosity.)
DARREN:
And while Eve was alone, the snake came along. And just why did she not freak out? It was a snake!
BROOK:
Remember, things were still perfect. And all the animals were tame and friendly.
(looking at Bible)
AND it says that the snake had legs and was very beautiful. And it could talk? Could the animals talk?
DARREN:
Here! This verse says that Satan spoke through the snake.
BROOK:
Now that is creepy.
DARREN:
Obviously, angels had already been created, and they also had a choice to make. Satan and some other angels chose to disobey God. They became evil and were called demons. And Satan’s goal is to mess up God’s plans.
BROOK:
And throughout the Bible, we will see that Satan TRIES to mess up God’s plans, but we also see that God always wins.
DARREN:
So here, Satan entered the snake and spoke very clever lies to Eve.
SNAKE’S VOICE:
(offstage, but close to tree)
Ss-ssss, Eve. Did God really say that you should not eat from any tree in the garden?
EVE:
(pointing to tree)
We can! But not the fruit from this one! God said we will die if we eat from it. Or touch it!
BROOK:
(speaking to Darren)
God did not say anything about not TOUCHING the fruit.
DARREN:
It’s one reason why we should always continue studying the Bible, so we won’t be tricked or confused.
SNAKE’S VOICE:
You won’t die! God knows that when you eat from it, you will see clearly and you will be LIKE God, knowing good and evil.
(Eve starts contemplatively admiring the tree.)
BROOK:
Oh-oh. No! Eve, no! It’s a trick.
(Eve picks a fruit and takes a bite. Brook and Darren groan with disappointment. Adam enters and sees Eve.)
ADAM:
Eve, what have you done?!
EVE:
I- I wanted to know everything God knows. And the fruit was so good. Here, try some.
(Adam takes the fruit to study before biting it. Brook and Darren both groan again.)
DARREN:
Dude! Why did you? Whyyyy???
(speaking to Brook)
Why would Eve do that to Adam?
BROOK:
She probably felt guilty, and didn’t want to be the only one who made that mistake. And- there’s no way we can ever know everything that God knows. I mean, God knows absolutely everything!
(Adam and Eve look at each other, alarmed, and suddenly hide behind the tree.)
DARREN:
Now what are they doing?
BROOK:
They can now see that they are naked.
DARREN:
Oh right. I decided that in my imagination they were wearing clothes.
BROOK:
Me too. But this is where they tried to make clothes for themselves out of leaves; and then tried to hide from God.
DARREN:
Notice - God came looking for them.
BROOK:
Because God still wants to have a personal relationship with everyone.
DARREN:
But- God called out, “Where are you?”
BROOK:
Remember, God knows everything. So of course, God knew where they were. God just never forces us to do anything. He created us with the freedom to think, and choose.
DARREN:
Ahhh... So, God asked them a bunch of questions, giving them the opportunity to confess, to admit they sinned.
(Adam and Eve step out with their heads hanging down. Then, Adam points to Eve. Eve then points offstage to snake. Then, they both look at each other with angry postures.)
BROOK:
Notice, things were no longer perfect. Adam blamed Eve. And Eve blamed the snake.
DARREN:
And then came the punishments, the consequences of sin....
BROOK:
Then, people all started thinking that they needed to be the boss of everything, and that started the fighting between man and woman.
DARREN:
To survive, work would become much harder. Women would have lots of pain having babies. And there would be struggles, sickness, and physical death. But worse than that – there would now be a spiritual death! Everyone born is spiritually separated from God. So, everyone must make a choice to be reborn– to ask God to forgive us of all our sins, in order to have a personal relationship with Him.
BROOK:
As for the snake, it no longer had legs, and it became slithery and icky and scary!
DARREN:
More than that, it says here that the snake would attack the heels of Adam and Eve’s children, but the children would injure the snake’s head. What does that even mean?
BROOK:
Oh! It is a prophecy of Jesus coming to earth, through the bloodline of Adam and Eve. Because Adam and Eve brought sin and death into the world, Jesus came to die for us and offer everyone eternal life, to anyone who chooses to believe.
(Adam and Eve kneel down into prayerful postures.)
DARREN:
God loves all of us and provides salvation for anyone who repents and believes, and then He even provides for our physical needs.
BROOK:
God even provided Adam and Eve with leather clothes. WAY better than having clothes made of tree leaves!
DARREN:
And God protected them from the other tree, the tree of life, because if anyone ate of it while being spiritually dead, they would have stayed that way forever. So God made them leave the Garden of Eden.
(As Darren points to offstage, Adam and Eve exit.)
BROOK:
WHY did they eat the fruit?!
DARREN:
Do you think you would have done any better?
BROOK:
Probably not.
SCENE 3:
ENDING OPTION 3A:
(If using this as a stand-alone skit.)
DARREN:
(closing the Bible)
While God has a plan, He is so very patient with us!
BROOK:
I’m so glad God loves us that much to never give up on us!
ENDING OPTION 3B:
(If you are continuing on in the series.)
(Darren closes the Bible.)
DARREN:
While God has a plan, He is so very patient with us! Well, I’m very curious how people are going to get along outside the Garden of Eden.
BROOK:
I guess we’ll find out next week. I’m just so thankful that God loves us that much to never give up on us!
